Thursday, July 25, 2002Ok, testing the new chat applet now. If you want to try it, CLICK HEREDelete the text in the box where it says "Nick" and put in whatever name you like, then click the area below. Don't worry about the password or server boxes. You'll get a java alert asking if you wish to run the applet. It states that it doesn't have a trusted cirtificate, actually, it doesn't have a cirtificate at all, so its possible it could cause problems if you have your browser security set quite high. I don't think it's anything dodgy, just that it's written by some guy as a hobby, who's not too concerned with cirtificates and stuff. Anyways, it works fine on mine, with no aparrent security problems, hits to firewall, or anything else strange going on, and as the irc network scans for hidden proxies, and isn't finding any, it seems safe enough. Certain servers don't appear to like its use, or lack of use, of identd, stating it has an invalid username, but this doesn't seem to be a major problem. The applet simply cycles through all the available servers till it finds one that allows it to connect. Anyone interested in using this applet for non commercial purposes can download it for free here. Also, as an afterthought, anyone interested in setting up a room of this type for their weblog or website, but who doesn't know how to go about such things as registering a room on a network, assigning protected ops status etc, is welcome to come to my chatroom and ask me about it.
