Oh this is funny.
Camarades, the webcam community I use to host my webcam is taking myowncam (a cam community I've also used in the past) to court, claiming myowncam sent emails via the Camarades users cam pages, to entice them onto their own service.
Well hah!
I can't comment on the validity of this claim, but I do know this, after a long time of being totally free, Camarades changed their policy, put stupidly oversized popups onto their users pages, and made it impossible for users to view any other cams without paying for full membership. Obviously, a LOT of their users, myself included were unimpressed with this, and went looking for alternative webcam hosting.
Now... I run a webcam community portal page that's listed number one on google when searching for webcam communities, and on that page, I list myowncam rather highly. Small wonder people moved to myowncam from Camarades in their droves.
The situation as it stands now though is somehwat different from what it was. Camarades have seen the error in their ways and gone back to being free, while myowncam is suffering serious server downtime and slowdowns, so users like myself have gone back to Camarades.
Still... I intend to offer my support to the people running myowncam, as Camarades heavy handed tactics, which they've displayed before, being all too ready to take smaller entities to court to maintain their position in the webcam communities arena, are to me somewhat uncalled for.

Which OS are You?
Which OS are You?

Ok, so personality test results as blog posts are pretty lame, but some of the questions in this test had me laughing so much, I sprayed my screen with saliva and had to clean it off.
Any test that can prompt me to clean my screen has to be a good thing. Now, if I can just find a test that'll induce me to tidy my flat...

Maintaining The Octopus Files can be a very mixed bag of blessings, as I get to see an awful lot of blogs that I wouldn't normally come across.
I was doing an update today, and as usual, among the ultra dull news blogs, and the raving religious fanatics, I found myself inundated with link requests to multiple blogs by one person. I'm not going to name names or anything, but good lord... what a sad individual. Multiple blogs, yes, but different content? Barely. Talk about going to extremes to get noticed... and this wouldn't really have mattered if it weren't all a load of absolute schitzoid psychobabble that no-one in their right mind would do anything but dismiss as utter rubbish. *groan* Get a life.
As I said though, it's always a mixed bag, and the last one I linked to was a real gem. So good in fact, I've linked to Crispyhead in my sidebar here too. See... now that's the kind of blog I like to read. Well written, thoughtful and funny.

Something I found via Faith, who found it via Michelle, that I found very interesting.
Quite probably they see it very differently to me, but this would appear to be the Australian perspective on the looming war with Iraq. I have to say, I pretty much agree with every single word of it.
The truth is, the more I think about it, the more dismayed I become with the whole situation. Insanity would seem to be prevailing, and sadly, I do believe we are the bad guys.

You're probably sick of reading me waffle on about emulators, but I'm sorry, I have to do it again.
I'm impressed. No, I'm VERY impressed.
Gran Turismo 2 on Windows? I'd heard about Play Station emulators, but didn't really believe they'd be much good. The console in question may be a bit long in the tooth these days, but those are still some pretty funky custom gfx chips, and would surely take a minor mirracle to emulate effectively enough to play any games.
So I thought. Hah!!!
Okay, here's the score. I'm running a Sharp laptop with a 1.1Ghz AMD Athlon, 256meg ram, with the S3 Savage 4 3D gfx card, which anyone who knows about gfx cards will identify as a truly crapy graphics chipset. So, a fairly average system, and extremely below average 3D capabilities. So, running the ePSXe emulator, with bios files from here and all the other required plugins from here, I'm now able to run Gran Turismo 2 at full speed, with only very minor sound glitching on options screens.
Way cool.

I'm in emulation heaven.
MESS the Multi Emulator Super System is a truly wonderful program based on the mame32 engine. I've had this piece of software sitting in my emulation folder for a couple of months now, and due to a lack of system roms, had considerd it fairly non-functional. Until last night that is....
First I found this site containing a whole pile of working system roms, followed by this site containing more roms, and quite a lot of software to run on several of the systems.
I could list all of the machines I'm now successfully emulating on this laptop, but the list is rather long... like around 200, but a few of the real gems and curiosities are as follows -
APEXC, from around 1957, this thing is freaky. No keybaord, monitor, or anything else that seems to make any sense, but a few flashing lights. Odd.
The 1975 MOS Technologies KIM1, which looks more like a glorified calculator, having just an LED display and small keypad.
Chess Champion MK2 from 1979, a dedicated chess computer.
Assorted apples, Nascoms, Ataris, Commodores, Orics, Tandys, Texas Instruments, and a whole host of other machines I've never even heard of.
My personal favourite though is a fully functioning Vectrex games system with a full set of working games.
Whoohoo!!! :-)

I have a widget.
No, seriously, I do.
Look, stop sniggering like that, just because I tell you I have a widget, your perverted little mind comes up with all kinds of silly ideas. I guess I'll just have to show you.
Look... stop giggling, damnit! It's nothing like that.
Here it is...
USB Memory Stick

This 'thing' that looks rather like a bottle of typing correction fluid is in fact a solid state 64 Meg USB removable data storage... er... thing.
I first heard mention of these when Batgrl spotted one a few weeks ago and rather raved about it. Sounded like a great idea, and something I could certainly use to transfer a whole load of stuff with from my old tower system to my laptop. The trouble is, there just didn't seem to be any about in this country... at least, not without ordering online, which I never do. So anyway, I spotted this thing in a shop I generally tend to avoid, and decided bugger it... I want it, crappy shop or not, and bought the thing.
It's totally plug and play on XP, though I had to install drivers on Win 98, but it was pretty painless, and has already saved me much grief, transferring two websites, a bot, and some music software all in one go, instead of having to upload and then download via the net to get everything onto this system. The tower doesn't have a CD writer, and using floppies just wasn't viable, so the widget seemd like the best option. Needless to say, I'm a happy geeky chappy.

Seems there's a big hoohaa again this year about the bloggie awards. Much talk of vote rigging, conspiracies among the judges and high profile candidates pulling out.
Ho-hum. You can't have it both ways folks. Last year there was an uproar because Wil Wheaton won damn near everything due to him being famous and getting lots of votes. This year the judges had a larger say in the results and again you think it's not fair.
Hah! There's always gonna be someone screaming "fix" when their fave blog doesn't get nominated.
For the record, I was nominted, though clearly didn't even get close to being a finalist, and I only knew about it when I saw a few hits coming in from a page on the bloggies site that I couldn't access. Doesn't bother me at all that I didn't get anywhere, 'cause I'm thrilled to bits that anyone likes my blog enough to even nominate it.
Maybe some people are just in it for the hits, like... obviously the final nominees and winners are gonna get huge hits, but hey, if you wanna get noticed, write a better blog, and then put in the time and effort to publicise the thing. The question should also be asked, what are you blogging for anyway? Surely not to win some online award? It's all about self expression isn't it? Having a say on whatever you feel like?
I feel quite embarrassed to be even writing about the thing, it's so insignificant, but hey, it's early, and I don't have anything more interesting to write about yet.
Give me more time... I will write a better blog, I promise.... maybe.

Now, I don't much care for political blogs... in truth, they bore me senseless, but just this once, I'm gonna do something I wouldn't normally do, and state my views on the potential war with Iraq. I dare say none of this will be new to anyone, as it's mostly pretty obvious. I just feel like throwing my two pence worth in.

First and foremost, and despite what the likes of George Bush and Tony Blair would have everyone believe, this (potential) war is not about Iraq supposedly having weapons of mass destruction, though I suspect Britain's reason for going ahead is enitrly different to that of America.
To quote George Bush "It's clear to me now that he (Sadam) is not disarming,"
Really? How exactly is it clear to him? Does he have a crystal ball? The weapons inspectors have found nothing, and he's obviously not prepared to wait for them to complete their inspections, so there has to be another motive.
For America, it's mostly about oil. After 9/11, Bush rather wants to distance himself from Saudi Arabia, since most of the terrorists who committed that atrocity were from there... so, what would be a good alternate supplier? Oh look... Iraq has lots of oil, no-one much likes them, and with all the fears of terrorism and terrorist supporting countries, it wouldn't take a great leap of imagination to trump up some excuse to invade them and take control of their oil. For sure, America won't simply take over Iraq and steal their oil, but it's a pretty safe bet they'll have the final say on who governs the country after Sadam's been toppled... the most likely candidates to succeed him obviously being those who'll offer America the best deal on oil.
There may be another possible reason behind Bush's urgency to go to war though, that being his general incompetence on the home front. Just like Maggie Thatcher in the 80s, things were looking pretty lousy on the domestic political scene, but the Falklands war pushed her popularity sky high and kept her in office for years to come. Bush is clearly taking a gamble here, hoping that a tough stance against an aparrently agressive nation will improve his standing. I dunno that this'll pay off though, `cause the last report I heard said 80% of Americans were opposed to a war against Iraq, at least without a UN mandate.

Britain's involvement, I think, is not quite as clear cut. It's not about the oil, and it's certainly not about any potential threat. Truth is, the reasons are probably mostly historic. Firstly, Britain still owes America a huge favour from WWII, with the so called 'Lend/Lease' arms deal. America basicly gave us tanks, and whatever other hardware we needed, to be paid back in whatever form was convenient... that turning out to be co-operation in military action (so it seems).
A second major reason is that Britain REALLY needs America, kind of like a big brother. Even after the break up of the British Empire, and with numerous countries around the world who hate our guts after we dominated them, expolited their resources and whatever, we still have a massive influence over world politics. Quite astounding when you consider how small a country this is, and hence how small our industrail strength is compared to many other nations. The reason is simple. We back up America whenever they ask, and they'll come to our aid should any other nation decide they've had enough of this annoying little terrier of a nation. "If you piss me off, I'll set my big brother on you."
We hope they would anyway... this hasn't been put to the test since WWII.
If there's another reason behind Briatain's involvement, it's a very basic and primitive one. Britain IS a warlike nation. We love a fight, and will gladly kick another nation's arse, just to show our troops are better than theirs.

Controversial? Almost certainly.
Overly simplistic? Maybe.
The truth? I think so, you may not... but I'll tell you this, the decision to go to war has already been made, and it has bugger all to do with anything the arms inspectors may or may not find in Iraq.
Do I believe this is a justifiable war? Hell no, but just like any other bloodthirsty immoral asshole, so long as it doesn't affect me, I'll lap up the free firework show on tv every night, without sparing a thought for the thousands of innocent people who'll suffer.
The simple truth is, humans as a species thrive on violence. The only real difference between us and a band of warring baboons is that we have bigger guns, and get to watch it live on tv.

A bigger question though is, will we actually win this war? I'm not so certain this will remain a war between Iraq and America/Britain + allies. If others join in opposition, and with the current atmosphere in many muslim nations, where they feel they're being oppressed beyond all reasonable tollerance, things may not turn out quite as people expect. I'm not saying the allied western nations will get their arses kicked, but things may get VERY messy.

Wednesday, wednesday, wednesday.
Wednesday is something of a limbo day for me, and it's becoming an issue, albeit not a majojr one... just niggly.
Here's the score. On wednesday, I go visit my mum in the afternoon. We used to go into town for coffee, but since winter, she doesn't like to travel on the buses after dark. Fair enough, she's a nervous woman at the best of times, so now I go round to her house. The thing is, when we were in town, there were things to do, places to go, and sights to see. If the conversation ran dry, which it usually did, conversation not being one of her strong points, we'd just go window shopping or whatever.
Now I know this sounds awful... she's my mum, and I love her, but going round there every wednesday, drinking endless cups of coffee and staring at the walls... it's, well... getting a bit frustrating. Keeping the kind of hours I do, it becomes a lost day. There's no time when I leave to go and do practical stuff.
Ah well. It won't be long before the light lasts a bit longer and she won't be afraid to take the bus again. Till then, I'll just either have to bite my tongue and deal with it, or make excuses and feal guilty about not going on occasion. I guess none of this may make much sense to an outside viewer. I'm just whining and being selfish, but there are issues that I'm certainly not going to divulge here which make the whole thing very uncomfortable for me.

Funny how 10:37am on a tuesday morning seems to be a time of day that precludes the writing of a good blog entry. Probably because I've only just got out of bed and nothing's happened yet worth writing about. It may also be because I'm hungry, not having had breakfast and all that. Does coffee count as breakfast?
The question should probably be asked though, why write a blog entry before anything noteworthy has had a chance of occurring? I can answer that in one word. Procrastination. It's either do this, or go into town for the weekly visit to the bank. Oh... and I was kinda hoping one of you nice people would nip down to the shop for me to buy food for the cat.

That was a pretty cool weekend, it has to be said.
Saturday, we went and watched Star Trek - Nemesis. Ignoring the slightly questionable continuity in places, this has to rate up there with First Contact among Trek movies. There's an awesome battle sequence, possibly the best yet, and this is surely what a lot of people watch these films for, so no-one's gonna feel short changed. Death of a major character? I'm not saying a word.

Sunday morning was spent tinkering with the template on Brigitte's blog. A joint operation, and certainly something more fitting with her character than the original look. She likes it, I like it... go tell her how nice it is :-)
An afternoon spent playing video games was nicely relaxing, and kind of amusing. Brigitte fell asleep while I played Gran Turismo 3, while I fell asleep as she played Crash Bandicoot. Hehehe... I hate that game ;-)

The train ride home this morning was amusing for entirely the wrong reason. There was this guy sitting just ahead of me in the coach, and for the WHOLE of the journey, he had a finger stuck up one or other of his nostrils. He'd dig around for a bit, look at his finger, wipe it on his jacket, and then continue in the other nostril. You'd think that'd be it... but he'd then go back to the first nostril and start all over again. I dunno, either this guy has some extremely overactive crusty snot glands up there, or he's just bloody disgusting. Trouble is, even when I looked out of the window to get him out of my field of vision, all I could see was his reflection. Ack!

In non-weekend related news, I dunno what's happened with the chatroom. Clearly moving to the new network's made it easier for people to get in, but for some reason, instead of being inundated with trolls and lamers like we used to be, we've had some seriously pleasant and intelligent characters come and make themselves at home with us. I have to say, I'm quite thrilled, and find my enthusiasm for hosting the place has been rekindled.

This is where I get all geeky and start ranting about file management software, so if that's not your thing, you may as well move on.
Some of you may know that I'm a big fan of the Amiga computer, a wonderful machine that could've dominated the world of home computing and not left us all stuck with this windoze rubbish. Sadly, mismanagment by one Medhi Ali, a man with his head even further up his own arse than Bill Gates led the company to bankrupcy followed by ill fated buyout after ill fated buyout. Anyway... I'm getting further and further from the point here, so let me get back on track.
The Amiga had this program called Directory Opus, a file magaement utility so versatile you could basicly ignore the whole operating system and use it exclusively. It could read, view and edit pretty much any file you cared to mention, archive and unarchive in pretty much every format going, and copy or move stuff all all around your system without having to open a single window, and that's before we even start talking about its ftp capabilities.
So... a wonderful program, and as far as I was aware, destined to remain little more than a novelty on the Amiga emulator I sometimes run on this laptop. But wait... there's more.
I was in town this morning, and wanting something to read while munching my MacD's 1/4 pounder with cheese, I wandered into the local WH Smiths newsagent and perused the 5 billion or so pc magazines. You know how it goes, you pick them up, one after the other... boring... boring... boring... holy cow! What's this?!!! Staring back at me off the cover of PC Answers (or it would've been if it had eyes) was a cover disk featuring none other than a shiny new and extremely free copy of Directory Opus 6 for windoze. Oh happy day.
So I've been sat here for the last 1/2 hour playing with it, and trying to make it work in the same way my old copy of version 4 did. It's different, that being progress for you, but oh my, I love it.
Oh yeah... there was a copy of Paint Shop Pro 5 on the disk too... but that's boring. Who'd want to hear about that? ;-)

Y'know, it's a real pity the chat applet in the room doesn't support sounds. Over the past few months, I've accumulated a huge collection of silly wav files, mostly from The Simpsons, South Park and Star Wars, and mostly things that tend to fit in with the kind of conversations we have in there.
Anyway, over the past couple of days, I've compiled these wavs into a set of zip archives, including a small script with each one that provides an easy access menu for mirc users. So, if you frequent the chatroom, use mirc, and wanna join in all the audio sillyness that goes down in there, let me know, and I'll dcc them across to you.
I'd thought about putting them on one of my web servers, but the size of them (between 500k and 1300k) would probably push me over my bandwidth limit if google got wind of them. So, if you're a regular chatter there who uses the applet on the webpage.... well... you're either gonna miss out on a lot of laughs, or gonna have to go download mirc and learn how to use it. Trust me, it's worth it, and far more versatile than the applet.

Oh the joys of job interviews.
It's always the same, even for a really crappy job. The interviewer looks at the cv (that's resume, to you americans), asks what happened to my last job and why I haven't worked in 2 years, and I then watch their eyes glaze over before I've even answered. It doesn't matter to them that the domestic problems that caused my previous employer to let me go were a mere glitch in an otherwise good and long career history. It doesn't matter to them that I have all the skills and experience that they could ask for.
I guess the simplest answer I should give them is "My last job ended because I had shitty luck, and I haven't worked in two years because of arseholes like you who ignore a good 17 year work history in favour of one blot."
Yeah, I know I could easily rectify this situation by going to an agency and doing temp work, but yeash, that SO sucks.
Still, looking on the bright side, at least I have lots of cool stuff to keep me occupied in my rather extensive spare time.

Ahhhh... I feel human again.
After a week of catching barely more than a couple of hours cat-nap a day, I was starting to feel rather ill. This weekend though, I managed two half decent nights sleep in a row. The relief is just incredible.
So anyway, when I got home this morning, I set to work on some badly needed website updates. The Octopus Files is now back up to date after being neglected for a week, while the chatroom menu's have had something of an overhaul.
Things are looking rather good in there just lately, and after nearly abandoning the room completely through disillusionment and general lack of interest, I find myself quite enthusiastic about the place again. For reasons that elude me, the quality of visitors dropping in of late seems far higher than in previous months, and it's a pleasure again to hang out there.

Saturday, January 11, 2003

Found via -e-, I did the emode inkblot test this eveing, and here's what it had to say.

Steve, your unconscious mind is driven most by Imagination
This means you have a deep desire to use innovative ideas to enhance your life and influence the world around you. This drive influences you far more than you may realize on a conscious level.

Your need to be innovative drives how you look at new opportunities and the kinds of experiences in life you choose to have. On an unconscious level, the reason you may be so driven by imagination is your fear of destruction, the opposite of creation. When you are unable to create due to restrictions imposed by your environment or even ones you unwittingly impose on yourself, do you feel trapped or confined? You may find these feelings of unease only get better when you find another outlet for your imagination.

With such a strong creative orientation, you are willing to entertain a broad spectrum of ideas at any given time. The world is a fuller, richer place because you can contribute new ideas to any experience. Your natural curiosity inspires those around you and encourages them to come up with ideas they wouldn't have thought of without your help.

I have to admit to being rather impressed. Some of the questions seemed rather contrived at the time, but the results are bang on the mark.

Well, the good news is, Brigitte and I are back together :-)
Again, I'm not going into details, 'cause it's no-one's business, but we're both happy with the situation as it is now.

In other news, the new chat server seems to have made a big difference to the chatroom. New visitors are dropping in left right and centre, where before, very few people had the patience to wait for a connection. Good fun.

For anyone interested, the (somewhat dead) chatroom has moved across to irc.blitzed.org ...still called #Benway. This won't affect anyone using the chat applet, but mirc users will need to know. This is the 3rd change of network in the past 2 years, and hopefully the last. Stable irc networks offering the facilities we need seem hard to find, but this one seems okay so far, and certainly better than dalnet proved to be. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to bed. Haven't had decent sleep since... er.. I don't remember.

OMG!!!!
Call me sad, but I have tears in my eyes here... I'm so thrilled. I just found a couple of VERY long lost tapes. It's music I recorded waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back before I could even play an instrument, circa 1988, right through to an original master tape of the last stuff I did on guitar and keyboard before moving over to computers and midi circa 1992. I thought this stuff was lost forever.
I'm playing it now, just to remind myself how good/awful it all was. The later stuff's quite raw and simple but has a real charm to it, you can hear the ideas coming through, how I'd use my lack of skill to my advantage and make something really original. The earliest stuff... hehehe... it's unbelievably terrible, no-one but me would enjoy it. Time to fire up the CD burner and make sure I never lose this stuff again, then bung it all onto an mp3 comilation CD, everything I've ever done (at least the stuff I still have) right from the very beginning, to the stuff that I previewed on here last summer. A very exclusive few people can expect copies of this in the post whether they want it or not.

Ugh... wtf is this track? Still playing the tape, but this one's not on the tape I've been playing for the past 10 years. Freaky. Must be the last guitar piece I ever did, and hehehehe... oh my, there's a sample I ripped off from a game on the megadrive back then.

A year or so ago a friend of mine told me a friend of his had seen Minority Report and said it was crap. Needless to say, I completely ignored his opinion (like I do most people's opinions actually) but didn't actually get round to seeing the film till today.
Wow!
Very, very, VERY clever, and I'm not even talking about the effects. Easily the cleverest film I've seen since The Matrix. The funny thing is, I can't stand Tom Cruise... he's an arrogant bastard, but damn, he makes some good movies.
Interesting use of colour too. Where The Matrix is green, Minority Report is blue. I find I rather like that tinting effect they use in some films lately... makes me wonder if they copied the idea from the guy who directed Amelie. Ever seen Delicatesen or City Of Lost Children? He directed those, and they were very heavy on tinting the colour of the entire film.

Some minor changes to the sidebar. I've removed the 'Chatroom Bloggers' section, and placed the only remaining active blog, ie arry into the main blog links section. The chatroom itself has pretty much died, so I guess I'm not surprised that the others aren't blogging much, but I've got you all bookmarked, so if you should start writing again, I'll put the links back. Well, the past three or so days have consisted of two main activities, bingo, and Spyro.
Bingo was highly amusing, not to mention my first time. As you'd expect, there were all the usual suspects... grannies with their blue rinsed hair, old geezers with nothing better to do, and a whole host of other strange and bizarre characters. A great night out if you're into people watching.
We've been playing Spyro: Enter The Dragonfly for the past few weeks, and monday night, I sat up till 7am and finally completed the game. If you're a game player, you may have heard talk about all the bugs and glitches in the game, and it has to be said, they do spoil the experience a little, but it's still a great game. There does seem to be one final bug that may or may not be preventing me from reaching some rumoured bonus areas now I've completed the game. The stats screen shows that I've collected 7000 of 7000 gems, and all of the dragonflies, but on the main game screen, it says I only have 6800 gems. So, there's a castle in the main opening area, and the rumour is that you can get in there upon completion of the game... I can't get in, and aren't sure if it's supposed to be possible and the scoring bug's preventing me, or if it simply isn't possible. Anyone know anything about this?
