Wednesday, May 31, 2006So, not quite the final post here after all.I've been working on the photo gallery section of the new site, and have rather more photos than I'd realised. Anyone familiar with my old other photo gallery site, and flickr pages, will probably be expecting a hundred or so pics. Nope. Expect in the order of three hundred. Just goes to show how many very decent photos don't make it into my sites when I'm restricted for space. Anyways, we're off to York for 3 days today, so that'll be even more photos to add to the site. Yeah... I'm starting to think that deadline of a week or whatever isn't entirely realistic. Once I've got the majority of the sections there at least partially completed, I'll transfer this blog across, remove all the content from here, and have it automatically redirect. Shouldn't be more than a week. Labels: blogging Steve 6:45 PM [+] (0) comments Sunday, May 21, 2006We spent the weekend half way between Milton Keynes and Northampton, which was handy, coz it meant we could visit both my mum, and my sister and her family. The hotel was... interesting. We stayed in The Falcon, in Castle Ashby, having a room in 'the anex', which was in fact a cottage a hundred or so yards from the hotel itself. The building was pleasantly quaint, and the staff efficient and friendly. As per usual, we got our cheap deal on the cost of the room, and a good job too. Why a good job too? Well... the staff being pleasantly efficient pointed out that the resteraunt had closed when we arrived, but that we could have a sandwich if we liked, and they'd bring it to our room. Great we said, and ordered a ham salad and cheese salad. They were very nice sandwiches, and it was really nice of the staff to bring them the hundred yards to our room, but.... *** £8 *** for a sandwich? That's nearly half the price of the room for a night. Oh well. Yup... lovely place, but if you should ever stay there, unless you're absolutely loaded, eat somewhere else, or take your own food. Anyways... this is the view from our room. ![]() Pretty. Walking down country lanes in the very early hours, in the pouring rain is pretty fun y'know. It's SO dark. Oh yeah... chatting on irc while travelling up the M1 is quite an enjoyable novelty too. Yup. That was an enjoyable weekend. Steve 9:09 PM [+] (0) comments Saturday, May 13, 2006Yes!The cam thing works. Not giving out the url for it yet, coz I need to find the best way to utilise the thing. It doesn't stream as such, but what I'm able to do is click a button and automatically upload a photo from the cam to my web server. I've tested it, and though it's rather clunky, I can do this while chatting on irc. Should be a lot of fun :D Steve 6:58 PM [+] (0) comments Following up from yesterday's post, I've found a really cool piece of software for my MDA. I haven't tried it yet, but if it works, it would enable a potentially very interesting/popular feature on my new website. What is it? Mobile webcam! Eh? You've seen my home webcam. Imagine something similar, but outside... wherever I happen to be. How cool would that be? More details as and when I've tested it. Labels: gadgets, MDA Pro, phones Steve 3:37 PM [+] (0) comments I have a new toy... probably the ultimate toy for your everyday gadget freak. The T-Mobile MDA Pro... this thing is a 3G videophone, a camera, a sat-nav unit, a movie and music player, and an entire internet connected pc in your pocket. It's actually easier to list what it doesn't do than what it does. So it doesn't make toast or do the laundry, but it's got pretty much everything else covered. I bought it for 3 main purposes, largely related to the frequent siteseeing trips and short holidays Andrea and I are going on lately. The Sat-nav will get us there without getting lost, and then I can blog our visits and journeys, including photos, while we're still there, instead of having to wait till we get home. I also wanted to be able to go into irc chat from wherever I feel like... such as in the middle of a field out in god knows where. So when I get my new chatroom set up, you may find yourself chatting to me while I'm sitting at the top of a hill out in the peak district... assuming I can get a signal. The only faults I can find with it are the backlight, which has an annoying habit of not turning on when you power up, so you have to go into settings... and the browser. Pocket Internet Explorer may look nice, but it has no java script support, which makes it impossible to use blogger. Duh! Obviously I found a way around this. I installed Opera. I could go on all day about this thing but bleh. Just go out and buy one. Your internet usage will never be the same again. ![]() Labels: gadgets, MDA Pro, phones, photos Steve 11:41 AM [+] (0) comments Monday, May 08, 2006Work starts this week on the new website. The webspace has been bought, the domain name registered, and the basic design planned out. This blog will be moving and taking on a new look.... and will include some very old diaries I have sitting around... so basically it'll be my life story. My photo gallery will also be moving to the new site, though the flickr photo collection will remain, just coz it's easy to put the pics up there quickly... so it'll function as a kind of photo preview area. There'll be a section detailing my computer and console collection, with photos, specs, histories of the machines, and links to emulators, etc. There's gonna be a section where I just talk about whatever... like movie, game or music reviews. Anything technical I've learned that I think people might find useful... whatever comes to mind and doesn't have it's own section. There may be a forum, not sure yet, but there's definitely gonna be a new chatroom, and all being well, it should be on undernet. (Yay!) Work is only just starting this week, so don't expect to see anything for a couple more weeks at least... and I won't be revealing the url untill it's all more or less finished... but it's definately coming soon :D Steve 1:00 AM [+] (0) comments Tuesday, May 02, 2006I've just come back from the doctors and the phrase "Oh fuck" comes to mind.Last thursday, I felt a painful twinge in my upper stomach area, and on feeling it with my hand, found a large swelling, or protrusion. Not good, I thought. Anyway, I figured it might be a pulled muscle, from mowing the lawn, coz it's a pretty tough job, with the garden being on a slope and all. So, several days later it was much the same, and a trip to the doctor seemed in order. Well.... it's a hernia... probably a rupturing of the hernea I had repaired as a child, 35 years ago. So, I'm booked into the local hospital for surgery on the 6th of june. General anasthetic scares the crap out of me. Steve 4:50 PM [+] (0) comments This weekend we went back to Leamington Spa, Stratford Upon Avon, and Warwick... where we went to Warwick Castle, since we didn't have time last week. ![]() Lemme tell you, getting up the tower to take that photo was *scary*. 530 steps didn't exactly make it easy either. This photo is one of the many new ones I've added to my flickr site, so go click that flickr image thingie down on the bottom left and take a look. Steve 2:44 AM [+] (0) comments
