Friday, August 24, 20072 weeks of work, and no post... I guess I should update this. The job's entirely tolerable, the people are pleasant, the company is decent, the money is okay, and the hours suit my sleeping habits, but won't be ideal for me and Andrea when her holidays are over. Other than that, all I can say about it is, it leaves me next to no time for online activities. In some cases that's a shame, in others, frankly, I couldn't care less. Real life is proving more rewarding and on the rare occasions I catch a glimpse of the online places that I've left behind, I become more and more convinced that I'm better off having left them. Looking forwards again, now I have money coming in, and once I've dealt with certain financial obligations, I find I'm torn between what these days are my two main hobbies... photography and video games. So the question is, will my first sizable purchase be a Nikon D40X with a decent zoom lens, or a Sony PS3? I don't know the answer to this one... but I have plenty of time to figure it out. There are debts to pay off, birthday and christmas presents to buy, and a wedding and honeymoon to consider, before I can start looking at frivolous stuff. Steve 11:06 PM [+] (0) comments Saturday, August 11, 2007So it finally happened, and it was so easy.On thursday I walked into the local recruitment agency, and half an hour later, walked out with a job. I start on Sunday night. It's nothing fancy by any means... just work in a local warehouse, though being in the internet department is rather nice, and does apparently have opportunities to move up. Anyway... after far too long, it'll be nice to be doing more than only just scraping by... or even worse than that, as it's been recently. Andrea's been carrying me far more than I had any right to ask or expect, so now I can set that straight. While I'm working, I'll also be building yet another new website, though this one won't be nearly as ambitious as Benway's World. The reason I find myself conventionally employed again is Google. They changed their setup, so that search results are dependant on the country you live in. So... I have a .co.uk domain name, and almost all of my search hits now come from the uk... I lost all of my US hits... and most of my income came from US visitors. To fix this, I'm gonna have to set up a .com website, and then probably wait 2 years for enough incoming links to make google notice me. I can see why google have done this. It's for business websites. If you're searching for say... a window cleaner... you don't wanna be given a list of american window cleaners if you live in the uk. That's just fine if you want real world services and products, but in the online world, where you want a worldwide audience, it means having a local domain name will be something of a disaster. Hopefully this is just a minor and temporary ailment, as I fear for my sanity if it turns out to be long term. I'll be booking myself in to see the doctor tomorrow. Another task for tomorrow is to book myself into the local emplyment agnency. Pretty much all my usual income has dried up entirely, so I'm gonna have to get a proper job. Sucks. Steve 11:57 PM [+] (0) comments Saturday, August 04, 2007Cats are wonderful animals, and I love them to bits. They do have one drawback though, they sometimes aren't entirely smart, and can't be relied upon to not get themselves run over by cars. There was a knock at the door this morning, turned out to be our next door neighbour, saying what looked like one of our cats was laying in her bushes, and appeared to have a broken leg. So, I went round with her, and there was Milo, covered in what looked like black rubber from a tyre, and with a clearly non-functional rear leg. We took him straight to the vet as an emergency case, and yup... broken hip. It's upsetting, but far better his hip than his back. As I sit here typing this, we're waiting for the vet to phone us, to go and collect him after his operation. £500+. Scary. If you have pets, seriously... insure them. Having 7 cats here, that isn't really viable... but yeash. If you feel inclined, taking an interest in the ads on the right would be more appreciated than ever.
